His Majesty the King presided yesterday in Santander over the opening ceremony of the 28th Spain–United States Forum, accompanied by the presidents of the Fundación Consejo España – U.S.A. and the United States – Spain Council. The opening session, held at the Gran Casino Sardinero, brought together institutional and business representatives from both countries.

In his address, King Felipe VI highlighted the importance of culture as a fundamental element of the bilateral relationship and the Euro-Atlantic bond, emphasizing its role in building a relationship based on shared values and on conscious and voluntary interdependence.

“In the alliance between our two countries, within that Euro-Atlantic framework I referred to, what matters most—what should matter most—is precisely this: culture. A culture of relationship that makes dialogue something natural and indispensable, almost instinctive, that goes beyond circumstances or the current context.”

His Majesty also wished to acknowledge the longstanding collaboration between the two countries and the work of the institutions that promote it.

During the opening session, Josu Jon Imaz, President of the Fundación Consejo España – U.S.A., and Senator Ben Ray Luján, President of the United States – Spain Council, also spoke, both emphasizing the strength and strategic importance of the bilateral relationship.

Josu Jon Imaz stated: “I am convinced that Spain’s relationship with the United States will continue to be of the utmost importance for the security and prosperity of both countries, as well as for the overall balance of the transatlantic alliance.”

For his part, Ben Ray Luján said: “Spain and the United States have shown time and again that our talent, our investment, and our values are stronger and more resilient when we work together.”

The King took the opportunity to congratulate the U.S. delegation on the occasion of the Fourth of July and emphasized the value of democracy as the foundation of the bilateral relationship. He also underlined the importance of maintaining public-private dialogue platforms such as the Forum, which allow both countries to reflect together on key current and future challenges, including the energy transition, sustainable mobility, and artificial intelligence.

The opening day concluded with performances of the U.S. and Spanish national anthems and a fireworks display from Sardinero Beach, as a festive close to an event that reaffirms the commitment to cooperation and mutual understanding between Spain and the United States.

The 28th Spain–United States Forum continues today in Santander with working sessions and debates on key issues for strengthening the bilateral relationship.
